This is the real story of a family impacted by a non-Covid death. This family was referred to us by the DCPU in Tiruvallur as they needed the Kinship Care support, even more.

Vijaya’s father passed away due to a stroke. The mother Lakshmi had no idea on how to raise two daughters all by herself, as no one supported her. So she attempted suicide by standing on the tracks in the path of a speeding train. While the older child passed away in the accident, the mother lost her left hand and survived with her younger daughter Vijaya.

The Tiruvallur District Child Protection Officer referred this family to social worker, Pradeep Chellan. When he met the family, he intuitively knew that the mother and child needed Kinship Care’s support. Through frequent visits and by developing a good rapport with the mother and child, Pradeep ensured the family was safe and had a person to reach out to. Pradeep started off with paying the school fees and added the child in the English reading programme. The mother’s life lessons that she learnt the hard way, have made her resolve to nurture Vijaya as a brave child. She has put her through Karate and that has changed Vijaya’s life. Kinship Care is fully supportive of the journey of this Karate Kid! Today Vijaya is a happy child, gaining physical and mental strength through martial arts, winning trophies and awards and excelling in academics too!
