MAKING IT HAPPEN – ‘Get, Set, Read!’

My journey with Bala Mandir Satyamurthi School started on December 1st, 2023.  Initially, as a mentor of Class VIII, I became aware of the fundamental needs of the students, which was far beyond books and education. I came to understand that the children were from various contrasting backgrounds. I understood that as a teacher, I ought to be versatile to handle them both with care and be unerring in my judgement.

I started with language training as the first step. On a regular basis, I gave them dictation in diverse words and made sure those words were used by me first often as possible in and out of the class. Gradually, the students started to accumulate those words subconsciously. I have utilised the morning prayer to dispatch an idiom per day. This was in order to acquaint them with the English language. Apart from this, our school had encouraged our middle school students of Class VI &VII to participate in the programme organised by the British Council to enhance the reading capacity of the students and to bring fluency in the language. I further substantiated the knowledge acquired at the event by coordinating the tasks assigned in the Reading Challenge Course (GET, SET, READ!). I carried out this exercise for about six weeks during the weekends.

Though it is a short span of time, I have initiated and utilised every opportunity to help build the student’s speaking ability, by making them participate  as  an MC for Sports day, creating Power Point Presentations for the Science Fair and the Library Renovation. Through this, as an English faculty, I was able to lay the foundation for public speaking for all my students.

With all these measures, the academic year was productive and fruitful to the students, for me and the organisation. I hope that these dedicated efforts will continue in the upcoming academic year as well
